![]() The problem with most of the historical Total Wars is that empire management simply doesn’t offer interesting choices. The Gothi start with only a few settlements - a pretty meager empire when compared to some of the competition - so there’s not much in the way of empire management early on, but as my borders expanded and more cities were conquered, I started to spend as much time fine-tuning my dominion as I did beating up pesky Romans. In combination with agent and army skills, you can make some properly beefy fighting forces, but only if you’re willing to make some sacrifices elsewhere. Sure, there's a lot of +1 zeal, +2 authority and the like, but each skill has several ranks, letting them grow with the general. They’re split up into recruitment, strategy, combat, maritime proficiency and governance, making it easy to create a highly-specialised general. I couldn’t tell you a single thing about Cannabaude's campfire stories, but I can keenly recall my relentless conquest of Greece, and how I held off the Sassanids, Armenians and Parthians with only a stack of brave Germanic warriors and the stalwart walls of Nicomedia.Īs I sent Cannabaude and the rest of my generals out into the world to loot and conquer, they quickly started levelling up, revealing the new skill trees. Through the wars and invasions that they inspire, the objectives are considerably better at spinning a yarn than the narrative events, too. It’s still a sandbox, but it’s not quite as messy. ![]() They do, however, give Empire Divided considerably more direction than plain Rome 2. Like the rest of the heroic factions, the Gothi get some unique objectives, though they’re lamentably just a string of targets - conquer this province, occupy or sack that city - with some flavour text and very few deviations. It's a far cry from the scripted battles, hunts for artefacts and quest chains that I've gotten used to during my battles across The Old World over the last couple of Total War games. Did he get his wolf pelt cloak by hunting the beast on his lonesome? Was boozing his one true love? Each choice gives leaders new bonuses, though it's not remotely clear what they are when you select them. Each of these vignettes allows you to pick how he tells the stories. His story is simply told via a series of narrative windows where he spends his time regaling his warriors with tales of his old adventures. They're led by Cannabaudes, a veteran of countless battles and campaigns. In my first attempt to become Rome’s new boss, I played as the Gothi, the only heroic barbarian faction. And there are no better Total War games from which to take inspiration for faction design. A bit of added flavour, a dash of roleplaying, faction-specific objectives - it all sounds a lot like Warhammer, at least on paper. Half of Empire Divided’s factions are ‘heroic’, getting their own unique victory conditions, bespoke event chains and special leaders who can’t die in battle. The scope is considerably larger than previous expansions, with ten factions - including the three Roman states - and a whole host of mechanics that aren’t strictly new for the series, though they are for Rome. It’s pretty fertile ground for a Total War game. ![]() It was the most popular Total War game before Creative Assembly started dabbling in fantasy, however, so the audience is quite a bit larger than, say, Attila’s, which I suspect explains why it’s seeing this resurrection.Įmpire Divided’s campaign takes place during the Crisis of the Third Century, which saw the Roman Empire almost destroyed by wars, plague and its separation into competing Roman states. It’s four years old, not even the latest historical entry, and in terms of both the presentation and the real-time battles, it’s a step backwards from Warhammer 2. Rome 2 is probably not the best showcase of the future of Total War’s historical games. ![]() So where does that leave Total War: Rome 2 - Empire Divided? Total War’s historical games will undoubtedly continue to appeal to those craving a more grounded strategy romp, but so many of the series’ most significant improvements are inextricably linked to a fantasy premise. How can a historical Total War compete with dinosaurs besieging a fortress filled with wraiths and shambling corpses? Ever since the launch of Total War: Warhammer, but even more since the arrival of Warhammer 2, I’ve been wondering if Creative Assembly has backed itself into a corner. ![]() ![]() ![]() To sign up and receive the test, you must be qualified. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment has an official website where it is promoted as a tool for health professionals to help diagnose their patients who may have dementia. If you want to take a test at home, the SAGE is accurate and designed to be administered by a loved one rather than a medical professional. The test is meant to be administered and graded by a doctor. If you’re wondering whether increased forgetfulness is a result of Alzheimer’s or just normal aging, this means Montreal Cognitive Assessment is the best test to take. In one section, this means moving from numbers to letters and back and forth in order (1, A, 2, B, etc.). Some of the questions on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment are intended to test “executive function,” which is the ability to focus and reason through a sequential task. Significantly for people who take the test because they’re worried they may be in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, MoCA is much more effective at identifying Mild Cognitive Impairment which is often considered the earliest stage of dementia. ![]() Montreal Cognitive Assessment is therefore a useful and mostly accurate tool for identifying dementia. This means 94 percent of people who have dementia scored less than 26 out of 30 on MoCA (25 and under is considered at-risk). Studies have found MoCA to be about 94 percent accurate in telling whether a person has dementia or not. – Does not provide a diagnosis, so it must be paired with other tests including brain scans and a neurological testing before a diagnosis can be made. – Must be administered and graded by a healthcare professional, so an appointment with a nurse, doctor, or therapist is required-as opposed to the SAGE and other tests that can be taken at home. – Is relatively quick, taking between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. The MoCA is also better than the Mini-Mental State Exam at indicating if people with Parkinson’s disease are showing signs of Parkinson’s disease dementia. ![]() MoCA has been proven effective for showing early-stage dementia, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI). People who are in the early or mild stages of dementia might be able to score high enough on other tests including the Mini-Mental State Exam that the score would indicate no dementia is present. – Better for detecting in the early stages. Studies have shown MoCA correctly identifies dementia about 94 percent of the time. The test was created in 2005 by McGill University researchers, working in Montreal with people who have significant memory problems. – Clock Drawing Test: Famous for evaluating dementia warning signs – Concentration: Repeating simple sequences forward and backward – Language: Ability to speak and understand whole sentences, and remember the names of well-known animals or objects – Focus and spatial awareness: Connect numbered dots in sequence, and draw 3-dimensional shapes – Short-term memory: Ability to hear a word and repeat it back a short time later – Orientation: Knowing the day, date, and your present location The 30 questions assess multiple aspects of thinking that are impacted by dementia. Mental Illness?. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fun fact, I think the majority of textures included in this pack are glorious lines of high definition comic sans text. I may also miss some obscure messages in the game. I will not be reworking subtitles or the story recap text. I will basically stick to menu descriptions and other key text. All text descriptions and subtitles in the game are dumped essentially line-by-line as individual images and no single font sheet that I can easily recreate in HD. General Text and Subtitles (the bane of this texture pack. Character Theme Backgrounds (if I actually complete the above points and don't feel entirely burned out by then, I might remake all of the character theme backgrounds. I need to start another file to dump the proper textures) Story Mode Recap Backgrounds (all the backgrounds present during the story mode recap whenever you resume a story playthrough. I currently have not managed to dump all of these textures) Capsule and Item Pickup Icons (includes pickups like ring and extra-life icons, plus capsule and animal pickups. ![]() I have no plans to redo the Chao Kindergarten area currently) this includes menus and UI elements for the Chao Lobby, Garden, Race and Karate minigames. Chao World (the bulk of the remaining textures. Here's a roadmap to give you an idea of what's left before I consider the pack "complete": While I don't update this pack often, I eventually plan to have one more major update, possibly followed by a small update or two for anything I eventually miss. As of version 1.5 of the texture pack, this includes most of the single player elements (menus, in-game HUD), the default theme background, and now most of the two player Battle Mode UI (menus and in-game HUD). Most of the text, menus, and various user interface elements have either been redrawn from scratch, or upscaled and cleaned up where recreating those elements isn't feasible (mostly stage preview pictures). The Sonic Adventure 2 HD GUI+ texture pack aims to do what it says on the tin. So, here's the revised texture pack info: With the first major update I've made to this texture pack almost a year after I started it, I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to unclutter the info section of the post at the top here. With that, check out the changelog while you wait for the pack to download and enjoy! Installation instructions are below, but if you'd like to use it with earlier versions of the emulator, just extract the archive anywhere and copy the GSN folder into the dolphin textures folder like usual. Also, with version 2.0 of the pack, it is now a resource pack which requires a recent development version of dolphin. The pack has gone from 771 textures to a whopping 4672 and almost 2GB. There's updated screenshots and info in my latest post, but the newest download link and changelog are just below. Well, Version 2.0 is here, and I am officially changing the name to the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle HD Project, as the texture pack is no longer just an update of the UI plus some extras, but an update of almost everything in the game, from character textures to stage and environment textures. So, without further ado, download and enjoy! Turns out, they're going to take a bit of work and elbow grease to make look good, which is why I decided to release this update now without them. The only major additions left are the alternate character costumes for Battle Mode. With this, I'm almost ready to call this texture pack complete. New screenshots can be found in my latest update post. For a bit of fun, I also changed the resource pack logo to match the style of the SA2 Dreamcast VMU icon. I also redrew various characters' skin textures after I noticed the upscaling made them look blotchy. Version 2.1 is here, and with it comes all of the cutscene textures, chao world textures, all of the alternate kart race karts, and a bit more. You'll find the download and instructions below, so enjoy! Otherwise, I have combed over every bit of the game I could and believe about ninety-nine percent of everything else has been retextured. There are a handful of things the texture pack does not cover, inlcuding story subtitle text and other related story text, plus some other textures that are dynamically generated by the game. ![]() It's been a longer project than I ever expected, but enjoyed working on it and experimenting with new tools, and I am pleased to be able to share it with the community here. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle HD Project version 2.2 is here, and with this release, I consider the main texture pack to be complete and this is likely to be the final version. ![]() |
